THE STORY BEHIND STRATHNAIRN BEACH CAFE: LOCAL FOOD AND COASTAL ROOTS

The business is a small family-run beach café rooted in the heart of the Highlands. It is powered by quality local produce, fresh sea air, and a brilliant team. There is a deep love for running the café, working hard to balance busy service days with family life. Strathnairn Beach Café is a reflection of that: relaxed, grounded, and proud to call this coastline home. The ethos involves providing delicious food in Nairn, freshly prepared for guests to enjoy in a beautiful seaside setting.

WHO WE ARE

ALEX

Alex was born and raised in Nairn as a fisherman’s son. His father owned the last fishing trawler in the harbour, ‘The Strathnairn INS 185’, which is where this seaside cafe takes its name. With a family history of running a popular hotel and restaurant on the seafront, hospitality has been part of life from the start. Early years were spent in kitchens, including a butchers in Germany. Following a degree in Business with German, Alex worked in top restaurants in Canada, Ardeonaig, and The Three Chimneys on the Isle of Skye. After years as a chef on yachts, the pull of the coast led to opening this Nairn beach cafe in 2020. When not in the kitchen, Alex enjoys golfing in Nairn, sea swimming, or spending time with family. He is committed to bringing high quality Scottish food and fresh local produce to the Highlands.

ELISE

Elise settled in the Highlands and met Alex at school in Nairn. Following studies in Textile Design, she worked as a visual merchandiser before qualifying as a specialist art teacher. She taught at various local schools in Moray, including Gordonstoun, before focusing on her favourite role as a mum. These days, Elise manages the behind the scenes operations, from social media marketing to the freshly baked cakes that come out of the kitchen daily. Her creative background ensures every detail of the cafe experience is visually striking. From sourcing local ingredients to styling the seasonal menu, Elise brings an artistic touch to the Strathnairn Beach Cafe team. She is dedicated to maintaining the high standards that define this popular seaside spot on the Moray coast. Her passion for the community and local food culture shines through in all her work.
